There was a lot of love for Venice this year, with recent arrival Nolinski serenaded for its rooms (maybe it’s the powder pink sofa in each one) and Biennale hangout Ca’ di Dio for its location by the Arsenale. Italy’s best-scoring hotel, though, was Rome’s recently restored Hotel Eden, a favourite with Fellini and now part of the Dorchester Collection. Como Castello del Nero, set in a 12th-century Tuscan castle, received high marks for location and its urbane design. The joint top-ranking hotel in Europe was Lisbon’s Palácio Príncipe Real, partly for its design, but surely also for its secret garden in the heart of the city. Elsewhere, amid Norwegian wilderness lodges, Berlin suites and Swiss mountain lairs, we saw appearances from The Agora, a new boutique hotel in Cyprus, Turkey’s beach-clubby Yazz Collective and Coco, a solar-powered, farm-to-table stay in Copenhagen.
